My daughter has done a little shopping on her visit. Hopefully, the next time she visits I will have a proper bed set up in another part of the house for her and her husband.Anyway, I have been thinking about how I want to store my fabric. When in my basement room I stored it like this:
This has worked fine for me, but I don't really know what red fabrics I have, I have to pull each one of the containers out and sort through it. I thought that it would be so much better if I could see it. I worry about putting it on a shelf without protection though. It will get dusty, and be exposed to light which will fade it. I could always USE it.. okay, one step at a time please..
So I came up with an idea. I can fold the fabric and put it on the shelf
I don't want to cover my windows, that would just darken the room, and I might as well be in the basement. So I came up with a plan to use my orphan blocks. Sew them to make little 'quilts' that I can make the same size as the opening of my shelves. I can use velcro to attach the 'quilt' which can be removed when I need to look at my fabric. Problems solved.. a use for orphaned blocks, natural light in my studio, decoration with 'quilts' and my fabric will be protected from dust and the light will be filtered and the fabric will be protected until I use it. Now, if I could just get to the shelf....

Interesting idea. I opted for open storage but I don't have windows in my studio. Can't wait to see how this works - sounds cool!
I like my fabrics in boxes. Then, I can pull out the box to a table and look through it. I had it "stacked" on shelves for many years and it was always messy and daunting looking to me. Now, with the boxes, everything is put away and odd sized fabrics store well with full yardage pieces. When I go into my closet, I don't feel like stacks are going to come tumbling down on me. I would rethink the box idea if I were you. You could still use the decorative blocks across the front to hide the boxes.
That's a good idea. And if you make a red doorway cover for the red fabric, and corresponding ones for all the other colors, you won't have to figure out which curtain to pull to reveal the fabric you want.
Oh my, that looks like a daunting project. I store my fabrics in plastic drawer/tower thingies. I don't keep a ton of fabrics so it works for me.
Teri I just finished cleaning my quilt studio ... took me 7 days 7 nights .... I'll never let it get messed up again. Good Luck
